New charge filed in Russian Federation probe

Mueller Charges Lawyer for Lying to FBI About His Connection to a Trump Aide

U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has charged a lawyer with lying to investigators about his communications with Rick Gates, a partner of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort who also has been charged in the Russian Federation probe.

Alex Van Der Zwaan was charged with "willfully and knowingly making materially false, fictitious and fraudulent statements" to investigators.

Gates and Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman, were indicted by a federal grand jury previous year on charges that they conspired to hide their profits from work they performed on behalf of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, who served from 2010 to 2014. Van Der Zwaan was charged with a criminal information, which typically precedes a guilty plea.

The charge, outlined in a two-page filing, alleges that Van Der Zwaan secretly recorded telephone conversations with Gates in September 2016.

He was also accused of lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation and special counsel investigators about his last conversation with Gates, in mid-August 2016.

Alex Van der Zwaan, the Russian-speaking son-in-law of a Kremlin-linked oligarch, was charged Friday with lying to investigators about conversations related to his trial preparation work for Ukrainian politician Yulia Tymoshenko.

The billionaire Khan, who showed up in a recent list of Russian oligarchs with ties to Vladimir Putin, has sued Steele for libel.

Van Der Zwaan will admit that he wasn't truthful about his dealings with Rick Gates, Manafort's deputy, who is also charged and has been in negotiations about cooperating with prosecutors.

Gates met Manafort almost three decades ago while he was an intern at Black, Manafort, Stone, Kelly - one of the most powerful lobbying firms in DC.

The New York Times reported in September that the Justice Department had asked Skadden for information about its work for Yanukovych and his government.

Mueller is investigating Russian election interference and links between the Trump campaign and Russia. Van Der Zwaan, did work as an associate for the law firm Skadden, Arps, Meagher, & Flom LLP on behalf of the project. Trump says there was no collusion and Russian Federation denies meddling with the election. She was freed after Yanukovych's ouster in 2014.

On Friday, Mueller charged 13 Russian nationals with interfering in the USA election process.
