Former Oxfam official hits out at 'lies and exaggerations'

Roland Van Hauwermeiren, the former Belgian Oxfam worker who left his job after he was accused of using sex workers whilst responding to the Haiti quake, has spoken out for the first time.

"A lot of people, including the global media, will feel blushes on their cheeks when they hear my version of the facts", the Belgian national told Het Nieuwsblad. There are things that are described correctly.

"Parties every week? Fancy villas? Women paid with money from the organisation?", he told the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.

A spokeswoman for Oxfam said Singh was one of the men fired by the charity in August 2011, following revelations of sexual misconduct while he was working for the charity in Haiti in 2011 following the natural disaster.

Announcing the move, the head of humanitarian aid at Sida, Susanne Mikhail Eldhagen, said the project, which assists 250,000 people in Iraq, Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, would be suspended, conceding that beneficiaries would be affected.

It was reported last week that some Oxfam staff paid for sex with prostitutes in Haiti while in the country after the devastating 2010 natural disaster.

He said the Burundi man was reported to police, arrested and suspended as a volunteer, and the local charity partner co-operated with the police investigation and provided counselling and legal advice to the girl's family.

Cafod has also reviewed two historical cases of sexual misconduct allegations against other employees, with one yielding no evidence and the other seeing a staff member dismissed.

"I don't feel like reacting at all", he added.

Driver is the first celebrity spokesperson to abandon the charity amid the growing scandal, which includes allegations that Oxfam staff used sex workers in Chad, the CNN said. "What I see appearing everywhere is hard to bear".

"We acknowledge that hundreds of Oxfam staff have done no wrong and work tirelessly for the people they serve, but the handling by the senior team about this investigation and their openness with us and the charity commission showed a lack of judgement".

Meanwhile, a recent Channel 4 News interview has seen former Head of Safeguarding Helen Evans allege that abuse and sexual assault had even been reported by volunteers at shops in the United Kingdom, and that her efforts to highlight these issues were repeatedly ignored.

He is also accused of using prostitutes during an aid mission in Liberia for another British charity, two years before he joined Oxfam.

One of the Oxfam workers sacked over sexual misconduct allegations in earthquake-shattered Haiti was later re-hired by the charity in Ethiopia.

Oxfam has proved it can't be trusted with our hard-earned cash so it's time this Government stopped funding its failure and debauchery.
