Angela Merkel says she is 'curious' about the UK's Brexit negotiating position

Ed Balls the former shadow chancellor said British businesses want to stay in the EU customs union and would prefer to stay in the single market

Theresa May will warn European Union leaders that public safety will suffer if they allow "political doctrine and ideology" to hamper post-Brexit security arrangements.

The call followed a meeting between MI6 chief Alex Younger, the head of the BND, Bruno Kahl, and the director general of the French DGSE, Bernard Emie, at the Munich Security Conference. "It is a very complex negotiation and needs a balanced approach on both sides".

German Chancellor, Angela Merkel has said she is looking forward to learning Britain's actual plans for Brexit as a new round of talks start next week.

Britain has been accused of putting European security at risk because Brexit threatens its membership of the European arrest warrant and Europol, the EU's law enforcement agency.

In her speech on Saturday, Mrs May will point to the arrest of suspected terrorists and operations against people traffickers as examples of the benefits of cooperation across borders. 'But there is precedent for comprehensive, strategic relationships between the European Union and third countries in other fields, such as trade.

"This can not be a time when any of us allow competition between partners, rigid institutional restrictions or deep-seated ideology to inhibit our co-operation and jeopardise the security of our citizens", she will say.

'We must do whatever is most practical and pragmatic in ensuring our collective security.' Mrs May will set out the vast contribution Britain's policy, security and intelligence agencies now make to protecting lives across the continent.

The PM wants to set a new precedent with the bloc "through a deep and special partnership" as "Europe's security is our security".

Again she's asking for a unique arrangement.

The proposal was developed by the International Regulatory Strategy Group, an industry body that consulted widely across the European Union, as an alternative to the EU's "equivalence" regime that applies to third countries.

"The Government has said it wants to be fully part of that conversation".

One said: "They are going down the route of mutual recognition".

There is no current example of the sort of security agreement the United Kingdom is seeking with the EU, Mrs May will say.
