Is Facebook losing younger users to Snapchat!

Facebook has a 'teen problem' as younger audiences look to Snapchat

However, according to new estimations, the social media giant is struggling to attract younger users. According to commentators, it is a grown-up problem for the social network, which needs young users to develop the habit of checking Facebook to show them advertising into adulthood.

According to eMarketer, Facebook saw a 9.9 percent decline in the 12- to 17-year-old demographic in 2017 in the U.S., almost three times higher than the marketing firm predicted last year.

"Snapchat could eventually experience more growth in older age groups, since it's redesigning its platform to be easier to use", Debra Aho Williamson, a principal analyst at eMarketer said in a statement.

While the loss of younger users is a new twist on the Facebook story, the social media platform has been fighting to recapture the enthusiasm of yesteryear.

But eMarketer said the growth was coming in older age groups - and predicted that Facebook would lose 2 million United States users under the age of 24 in 2018. Most of whom likely ditching Facebook in favour of Snapchat and/or Instagram. This year, Instagram's user base is expected to grow 13.1% from last year's levels to 104.7 million. Snapchat is expected to increase 9.3% to 86.5 million users. "That's the predicament Facebook is in", he added.

However, Instagram still has more users in the USA than Snapchat, with their number expected to grow by 13.1% this year to reach 104.7 million.

In order to grow a bigger number of users worldwide, Snapchat needs to woo the older generations (people 35 or older). Snapchat, which is known for its disappearing messages, will continue to have more users aged 12 to 24 than Instagram, the researchers said.

A 9.3 percent drop for Facebook users under 11-years-old.

Nonetheless, from a Street perspective, Facebook still remains king of the social platforms. Notably, 2017 was the first time that analysts expected the company to see a drop in usage for any age group.

Facebook, earlier this month announced its quarterly earnings and the report revealed the time spent on network to have declined by an estimated 50 million hours per day.

For me, it's a lot simpler than that: Facebook just kind of sucks now - it's getting creepier with each new year and is, for all intents and purposes, more of an advertising platform these days than a true social network. Not done with keeping its users happy, Instagram had last December added a feature that will enable you follow hashtags instead of popular posts.
