High winds force more event postponements at Winter Olympics

In Pyeongchang, High Winds Are No Breeze for Athletes

Female Alpine skiers aren't the only ones who have dealt with weather issues at the 2018 Olympics.

Snowboarding great Shaun White brilliantly won his third Olympic gold today at the Pyeongchang Winter Games. In the process, they've made a star out of American singer/songwriter April Meservy, the Toronto Star reported, after using her cover of U2's With or Without You as their accompaniment.

Anderson's compatriot Hailey Langland, who fell on the first run but put in a solid second effort to finish sixth, disagreed.

"The event is something I've been really looking forward to all year, so I hope I can go out and deliver", said Taylor.

The wind gusts have been strong enough to push people around; by evening, metal detectors outside venues and all signage were laid down on the ground, to prevent them from being picked up by the gusts.

Of the 50 athletes in the field, only nine laid down a completed run, leading to concerns about the safety of the competitors.

"The FIS Jury monitored the weather conditions closely throughout the day, including consulting with the coaches, and considered it was within the boundaries to stage the competition safely".

"Got picked up in the wind on the bottom jump in practice and my ACL was not a big fan!" she posted on Instagram.

"I don't think anyone can say for sure (high winds) caused this accident but I think it certainly needs to be reviewed", he said on Monday.

"It was a long and hard day today", said the former Norwegian racer, twice a super-G world champion. For the second time in three days, Shiffrin's Pyeongchang debut was pushed back due to inclement conditions.

Now both of those races will be held Thursday, but on different hills, and Waldner said the weather should cooperate by then.

Although it is one of Alpine skiing's technical rather than speed events, the top skiers can still get up to 40 kph (25 mph) on the giant slalom course and crashes can be dramatic.

Breitfuss will compete again on Friday, February 16, in Super Giant Slalom and will close his performance in giant slalom on Saturday, February 17, while his teammate Timo Juhani Gronlund, 30, will compete in cross-country skiing.

Sunday's men's downhill has also been rescheduled for Thursday.
