Republicans approves massive budget deal Video

Congress had weeks to pass another budget deal to keep the federal government open. The government shut down for three days earlier this year as Democrats blocked a bill to try and force a compromise on immigration, and Republicans pushed the government to shutter in 2013 as part of a bid to undo Barack Obama's healthcare law.

Senator Rand Paul on Thursday blocked the Senate from a vote on a short-term funding bill which will fund the government through March 23 and a bipartisan budget package which will set a spending framework for fiscal year 2018 and 2019.

Prospects for avoiding the temporary shutdown were dashed when Republican Sen.

McConnell said the deal includes increases of nearly $300 billion for defence spending and domestic programs, $80 billion-plus in disaster relief and raises the debt ceiling.

"The senator from Kentucky by objecting to the unanimous consent request will effectively shut down the federal government for no real reason", said Cornyn.

Once known as the party of fiscal conservatism, the Republicans and Trump approved a sweeping tax overhaul bill in December that will add an estimated US$1.5 trillion to the US$20 trillion national debt over 10 years. Rand Paul repeatedly held up votes on the budget plan, which is married to a six-week government-wide spending measure.

"I can't in all good honesty and all good faith just look the other way because my party is now complicit in the deficits", he said.

Beyond $300 billion worth of record increases for the military and domestic programs, the agreement adds $89 billion in overdue disaster aid for hurricane-slammed Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, a politically charged increase in the government's borrowing cap and a grab bag of health and tax provisions.

House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, said in a February 6 statement he thought House Republicans' priorities made great progress, especially on issues such as increased funding for K-12 schools, a strengthened workforce, the opioid epidemic and increased government efficiency.

The White House's current proposal - one that would put 1.8 million immigrants on a path to citizenship, but also boost border security, and dramatically curtail legal immigration - has been panned by Democrats.

The colossal bill, which lawmakers have been negotiating for months, would be a game-changing piece of legislation, clearing the decks for Congress in dealing with major spending issues as well as doling out disaster relief money.

The shutdown came after a one man protest from Sen.

"But really, who's to blame?" Markets barely flinched at the last shutdown in January, but that was before a selloff that started on Jan. 30 amid concerns about inflation and higher interest rates. However, it does not include funding for border security or deal with protecting young illegal migrants brought to the USA as children. "Her team was in on it", said top GOP vote counter Patrick McHenry, R-N.C.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and others in her party had opposed the bill because Republican House leaders would not guarantee her a debate later on bipartisan steps to protect about 700,000 "Dreamer" immigrants from deportation.

"My commitment to working together on an immigration measure that we can make law is a honest commitment", he said.

"It spends too much money, borrows too much money, and actually we're going to bring back Obama era deficits", Paul told Fox News on Thursday.
