Gerard won gold in the men's slopestyle en route to becoming the youngest American to win a medal in a snowboard event at the Olympics at just 17 years old.

The win was a dramatic one. after falling on his first two runs and dropping to 11th place. At just 17 years old, Gerard becomes the youngest usa snowboarder ever to win an Olympic medal, and the youngest snowboarding gold medalist of any nation since the sport was adding to the Olympic program 20 years ago.

He won USA's first medal of the 2018 Olympics despite starting in last place.

McMorris had an advantage knowing the score he needed to put up in his final run, but the 2014 bronze medalist under-rotated on a jump and crashed, ensuring he couldn't overtake Gerard.

But first, what you didn't miss, events that didn't happen because of the high winds: Men's downhill skiing, which was postponed to Thursday, and women's slopestyle snowboard qualifiers, which were canceled.

This was not the first time an American gold medal performance on NBC was spoiled.

Following a snowboarding accident a year ago, McMorris was fighting for his life after breaking 17 bones and suffering a collapsed lung and ruptured spleen. The 18-year-old, who is representing the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation, became the first competitor to shatter a world record at the 2018 Winter Olympics. After his first run Gerard posed with random fans for photos. His countryman, Max Parrot, delivered a clean run, however he fell about one point shy of Gerard's score.

"It's frustrating, it's disappointing and I can't really explain the Dutch sweep again", Blondin said.

Sunday, he'll attempt to do something none of his teammates were able to do - become the second American rider to medal in slopestyle at the Olympics. "I felt like it was a good run".

But it's even nicer for the man (boy, I guess?) who did it: 17-year-old Red Gerrard, a surprise victor of the men's snowboard slopestyle competition.

Olympic medal favorite Yevegenia Medvedeva notched the highest score ever recorded in the ladies' short program. "It was like, 'Alright, well I'm having fun doing it, ' and I'm like, 'I get to do online school now and not go to actual school.' And it's like I'm sticking with it and I ain't got nothing else going". Tyler Nicholson of North Bay, Ont., was seventh and Sebastien Toutant of L'Assomption, Que., was 11th. In total, he had 18 people flock to South Korea to watch him shred.

The big air finals are set for February 23-24 at Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre.
