Austria's David Gleirscher wins shocking gold in men's singles luge

That left only the final run, and Mazdzer did exactly what he needed to do to snare the historic medal for the United States.

And, he made history early Sunday, winning silver in the men's luge.

Mazdzer had a little trouble in run 4, but held it together and it looked like he would end up with a bronze medal. After his final run, he ran into the stands immediately to hug his family.

That opened the door for David Gleirscher of Austria who edged Mazdzer by.26 seconds for the gold.

Germany's Johannes Ludwig won the bronze, his compatriot Loch finishing a scarcely believable fifth, ending eight years of Olympic dominance, with his bid to match compatriot and mentor Georg Hackl's 1990s hat-trick in ruins.

Chris Mazdzer is the first American male to win a medal in the singles luge event since 1964, when the sport debuted at the Olympics.

After the first two runs on February 10, Loch led by 0.188 over Gleirscher and by 0.217 over Repilov.

Mazdzer finished 13th in two previous Winter Games, so this was quite a step up.

Any medal finish would be a huge accomplishment for Mazdzer, whose best finish in the recent World Cup was sixth place despite being ranked No. 3 in the world during the 2015-2016 season.

The bearded Gleirscher has a fine pedigree, with his father a three-times Olympian luger, but he had never made the podium at a World Cup event and only just sneaked on to Austria's team for Pyeongchang. The highest an American had finished in men's luge singles before today was fourth.

American Tucker West is in 18th place and more than a second behind Loch.

The only other USA medals in the sport came with back-to-back silver and bronze finishes in doubles in 1998 and 2002.
