EA Doesn't Believe That Loot-Boxes, Microtransactions Are Gambling

Respawn’s Star Wars Game Will Launch Before March 2020 Shannon Grixti

EA held its earnings call today, and there was a lot of Star Wars talk as investors and analysts had questions about the recent Star Wars Battlefront 2 controversy.

EA hasn't confirmed whether or not they will make any sweeping changes to Battlefront II's loot box system beyond the price reductions they implemented prior to taking microtransactions offline.

Star Wars is one of the biggest franchises on the planet, and should have been a sure thing for EA, but things obviously didn't go as planned.

As such, microtransactions are returning to try and boost revenue despite EA hoping to sell between 10-11 million copies by the end of their fiscal year in March. The resulting controversy was also largely attributed to Star Wars Battlefront 2 sales coming in below expectations for the quarter.

Likewise, The Sims 4 player base grew despite the game releasing in 2014. This is consistent with previous comments from Dice General Manager Oskar Gabrielson, who said "the ability to purchase crystals in-game will become available at a later date, only after we've made changes". This is why EA seems adamant in bringing back microtransactions to "Battlefront 2". But a year ago, EA released Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2, making for a tough comparison to year-ago figures.

We still do not know much, or really anything at all, about Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment's new Star Wars game outside of the fact that it's a third-person action game. "We're committed to continually working with our players to deliver the right experience in each of our games and live services". "Through the fourth quarter and fiscal 2019, we'll be launching games across five different genres, on three different platforms, and to players around the world". We should expect that EA will continue to "drive hard against that, and ensure that". That might be the choice of whether a player engages in a particular mode or not; that might be whether a player decides to grind for something or not. Will they ever contain only cosmetic items, as in a game like Overwatch? "It is including core game play and map design".
