Nintendo Switch exceeds lifetime sales of Wii U in just nine months

Consoles power up Nintendo like nothing else

JAPANESE GAMING OUTFIT Nintendo has revealed that its eight-month-old Switch console has already outsold its Wii U predecessor.

As of December 31, 2017, the highest-selling Nintendo Switch title is Super Mario Odyssey with 9.07 million software units sold. Following Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 7.33 million copies, and The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild sold 6.7 million. The rest of the world contributed 5.2 million units. On a table listing upcoming releases for primary Nintendo products, the untitled Pokemon Switch title is still scheduled for a "2018 or later" release.

The Kyoto-based company raised its profit forecast for the year ending March to 160 billion yen, from 120 billion yen. While that undoubtedly speaks to the apathetic response to the Wii U, it's also a sign that the Switch is exactly what Nintendo needed it to be. Nintendo lifted its full-year Switch software sales estimate to 53 million titles, up from 50 million it set in October.

Nintendo is expected to have much more in store this year, including new Fire Emblem and Yoshi titles.

And Nintendo can expect to sell even more thanks to an awesome new deal available at Argos.

Since its launch in March 2017 the Switch has sold 14.9 million units, while the Wii U only sold 13.6 million units from its launch in 2012 until it was discontinued in 2017.

"We believe Death Road To Canada is perfectly suited to be played in both the home and on the go", Rocketcat Games co-founder Kepa Auwae. The Nintendo Switch - a relatively low-powered portable/console hybrid system coming at the same time the PS4 and Xbox One were moving toward more processing power and 4K support- seemed to have a distinct possibility of flopping. The strategy is paying off. Nintendo said that its smart device and intellectual property-related income was 29.1 billion yen in the quarter, up 172 percent on the year. Again, Nintendo has increased its projections, stating that it expects to sell 53 million games this financial year.

Plenty to keep you and your Switch going far into 2019.
