The campaign for Judicial Accountability through advocate Prashant Bhushan filed a PIL in the Apex Court for a probe by a special investigation team into allegations of corruption against judges of higher judiciary.

Following the committee's report, the CJI, in accordance with the relevant in-house procedure, advised Shukla to either resign or seek voluntary retirement forthwith.

The Supreme Court has been functioning with only one woman judge for the past three years with Justice R Banumathi being the only woman judge since October 29, 2014.

The issue of favourable allotment of cases, and deeper alleged irregularities have not been discussed in the public domain, but the overall equation between the CJI and the other judges does not seem to have settled on a pleasant note.

Justice Misra is reported to have written to the President and the Prime Minister after three judges inquiry committee adversely commented on the conduct of Justice Shukla in a medical college scam. The PE, portions of which have been accessed by The Indian Express, states that "Source has informed that Shri I".

According to the list of business released by the Allahabad high court registry for January 30, Justice Shukla's name does not appear on the roster. The report, forwarded to Allahabad HC CJ D B Bhosale, said "the committee concludes that there is sufficient substance in the allegations" against Justice Shukla and that the aberrations on his part were serious enough to warrant initiation of removal proceedings.

Sources familiar with the matter said that justice Shukla has not been attending the high court since the last week as all judicial work has been taken away from him. The case is related to a Lucknow-based private medical college being probed by the CBI. Shukla joined the Allahabad High Court in 2005 and was set to retire in July 2020.

Finally, on September 18, a bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice refused to grant approval for renewal of recognition of the colleges in the MCI case for the academic session 2017-18.

The college was barred from admitting students for two years - 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.

However, Justice J Chelameswar, who had led the four judges in the unprecedented press conference, was not present during the discussions as he was on leave on Wednesday.
