The S&P healthcare index .SPXHC was the biggest gainer among the 11 major S&P sectors, up 1.3 percent, led by gains in AbbVie, Pfizer and Gilead.

Enbridge Inc. lost 1.1 per cent to $47.05, while TransCanada Corp. fell 0.8 per cent to $57.24. That's the highest level for that benchmark rate since July 2014.
