Smart City project: Nine new cities including Bareilly, Erode and Itanagar added

Hardeep Singh Puri Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Friday

Two-and-a-half years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of Smart Cities Mission, the Centre on Friday added nine more cities from seven states to the list, taking the number of cities in the mission to 99.

Over private investment into the projects under the scheme, he said, roughly 25 per cent of the total investment would come from private sector.

Under the smart cities scheme, central will allocate Rs 500 crore to each city for implementing various projects.

Announcing the list at a press conference, housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep S. Puri said that since the mission's guidelines mandated at least one smart city in each state, a spot has been kept vacant for Shillong in case Sikkim chooses to submit a proposal for evaluation.

While four cities nominated by UP could not get selected, one each from Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra could not make it to the list of total 99 cities.

The 9 cities selected have proposed an investment of Rs 12,824 crores of which Rs 10,639 crores would be in Area-Based Development (ABD) and Rs 2,185 crores in Pan City initiatives which would be impacting 35.3 lakh persons living in these areas, he said. Meanwhile, the government announced commencement of the Liveability Index Programme in 116 cities.

The cities can be rated as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 -star based on their compliance with the protocol conditions specified for each of the ratings, the minister said.

As of 17 January, 189 projects worth Rs2,237 crore had been completed, which is less than 2% of the overall proposed work.

He said these cities have proposed to take up various projects, including "smart" roads, rejuvenation of water bodies, cycle tracks, walking paths, smart classrooms, skill development centres, upgradation of health facilities and pan city projects like integrated command control centre.
