DACA was a done deal until Trump's ego came into the equation

US President Trump accuses Democrats of being all-talk no-action on DACA fix

The executive order provides temporary legal status and work authorization to illegal immigrants who were minors when brought to the U.S.by their parents.

President Donald Trump on Monday once again charged that Democrats in Congress were trying to force a government shutdown later this week by refusing to negotiate an acceptable budget deal for the military, and by not budging on what to do with hundreds of thousands of younger illegal immigrants in the USA under the Obama Administration's DACA program, as that issue continued to be a flash point for the two parties. President Trump announced in September that the program will be terminated by March 5, 2018, which will lead to the deportation of almost 700,000 DREAMers brought as children to the United States.

A week ago, with congressional Democrats and Republicans gathered around a table to talk immigration, the President showed flickers of leadership.

"The president wants to have his cake and eat it too", said Adriana Cerrillo, a community activist. I have met many of these young adults in my college classes.

Democratic strategists involved in 2018 races acknowledged the complicated politics of immigration but noted that protections for Dreamers are politically popular across the board and said Republicans - who control all levers of government power - would be blamed for a shutdown.

A continuing resolution is due to expire this Friday, but Republicans have proposed kicking the can down the road once more with an extension on stop-gap funding through February 16.

The reversal came over the weekend in response to a court order, in which a federal judge in California said the government must process applications while a lawsuit challenging the program's end is pending. A White House official has said Trump would sign the current version of the bill, up for vote in the House as soon as Thursday evening. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine - two Democratic senators who voted for a continuing resolution in December that did not include a DACA fix.

Graham said he is willing to continue speaking with the president about a potential deal, noting Trump has his phone number. However, as lawmakers return from the holiday weekend, the mood on Capitol Hill between the two parties - and even between factions within Republican enclaves - has soured after a tumultuous week that included a bipartisan group of senators announcing they had an immigration deal, Trump rejecting it and reports that the President had used vulgar language to describe the African nations affected by such a proposal. Trump's staunchest supporters consider any route to citizenship for the "Dreamers" amnesty for lawbreakers.

The debate over DACA's fate came as lawmakers faced questioning about whether Trump is racist.

Almost 93 percent of DACA recipients are employed, and 88.5 percent of immigrants under temporary protected status are employed.

"I've lost all trust in Durbin", Trump said.

"It's the opposite of what I campaigned for", Trump told Reuters in an interview.

"I'm not going to get into what I said, but I will tell you, it was a tough meeting", Trump said.

Perdue and Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., had issued a joint statement Friday saying they "do not recall the President saying those comments specifically".

Booker on Tuesday ripped into Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen during a heated committee hearing, after Nielsen denied hearing Trump say the words "shithole" or "shithouse" in a White House meeting last week.
