Kushner Told to Be Wary of Wendi Deng Murdoch

Not Released

Citing officials privy to the issue, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that there were concerns that Murdoch, a USA citizen and ex-wife of News Corp. founder Rupert Murdoch, could seek to push the interests of the Chinese government.

The Chinese garden, which would have cost $100 million and would be located in the National Arboretum, would have included a 70-foot-tall tower that USA officials deemed a national security risk. The project was located on elevated land less than five miles from the Capitol and the White House.

Ms Murdoch is the former wife of conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch, the executive chairman of News Corp which owns WSJ.

A spokesman said Wendi Deng Murdoch "has no knowledge of any concerns or other intelligence agency concerns relating to her or her associations", and denied she was aware of the garden project. The warning came via U.S. counterintelligence authorities, per the Journal's sources, and was based on the belief that Murdoch could be capitalizing on the relationship she had with Kushner and wife Ivanka Trump to push the Chinese government's agenda.

President Donald Trump also served as a trustee for an estate established by Murdoch for her children until 2016.

He included that she "has definitely no learning of any garden ventures financed by the Chinese government".

China, a political adversary to the U.S. and a rising world power, stands accused by the USA of forcing foreign firms to hand over technology and of protectionist practices that disproportionately favor Chinese companies.

It's unclear what, if any, reason officials had to single Murdoch out in their warning to Kushner or why they suspect her interests are not aligned with those of the United States.

Speaking of speculations, the report also mentions the old rumor that Wendi Deng Murdoch had an affair with Tony Blair when she was still married to Rupert Murdoch.

A Chinese-born citizen, she married in 1999 the Australian businessman, who filed for divorce in 2013. "I'd warrant Trump does more for Russian Federation than Wendi ever did for China".

The meeting was described as a "routine senior staff security briefing".

The Journal has written extensively about Wendi Murdoch's background before, including before Rupert Murdoch bought the newspaper in 2007.

The FBI said "there was motivation to be attentive" about Ms Deng, despite the fact that "they hadn't investigated her in detail", the WSJ source said.
