Japan city uses emergency system to recall blowfish packages

Last supper? Alert in Japan as deadly fugu fish sold by mistake in supermarket

A Japanese city has broadcast emergency warnings to prevent people consuming blowfish, after potentially deadly portions were mistakenly sold.

Regional health officials on Tuesday said a supermarket in the central city of Gamagori sold five packages of assorted blowfish meat.

Fugu fish or puffer fish is Japan's one of the most expensive winter delicacies, but it can turn deadly if not eaten with caution.

The health ministry ordered the store to recall all the blowfish packages and suspend their sale, but the store told officials that it will no longer sell blowfish, Ohashi said.

The officials are using loudspeakers, which are used to make announcements during an quake and other disasters, to alert residents.

"We are calling for residents to avoid eating fugu, using Gamagori city's emergency wireless system", local official Koji Takayanagi told AFP.

Three of these have been located, and no one has yet been harmed, but two remain missing.

Certain parts of pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin.

"Eating fugu liver can paralyze motor nerves, and in a serious case cause respiratory arrest leading to death", regional officials warned.

Fugu is considered a delicacy in Japan, and is typically served as sashimi (raw fish) or in a hot pot.

There is no antidote to the poison.

Several deaths are reported most years in Japan - although the number has dropped dramatically in recent decades - while dozens of other unlucky diners suffer from non-fatal symptoms.

A city in Japan has issued an emergency warning after a supermarket sold fugu fish without removing its poisonous liver. Chefs also need a special permit to prepare and serve the fish at restaurants.
