Chicago O'Hare airport travelers may have been exposed to measles

Infectious Disease Alert Issued for Newark Airport Passengers

An unidentified passenger traveling through Chicago O'Hare Airport on January 10 has tested positive for measles.

January 14-The Illinois Department of Public Health says people who were at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago on Wednesday between 6:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. may have been exposed to measles.

The passenger in question landed in Terminal 5 (the worldwide terminal) then transferred to a domestic flight in Terminal 1.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said those who were at the airport between 6:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time might have been exposed. However, it is entirely possible that the passenger also traveled to other areas of the facility.

"Measles is a very contagious virus, and it can hang around in the air for up to an hour or two after a person has left". If they were infected, symptoms could develop as late as the end of the month.

The person, who has not been identified, flew in from another country and landed, then boarded a second flight from Chicago to Little Rock, Arkansas.

"We urge everyone to make sure they and their family members are up-to-date on measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine and all other age-appropriate immunizations", said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Layden in the statement.

For more information about the measles, you should contact your health care provider or visit the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Measles can cause a fever, red itchy eyes and a rash.

Local health departments say they are working to notify IL residents who may have been exposed on the ill person's flights.
