Key update on Kenya Airways daily flights to NY

Kenya Airways to launch first US services in October 2018

Kenya Airways chief executive Sebastian Mikosz (centre) speaks during the launch of non-stop flight between Nairobi and NY.

Kenya Airways will launch daily Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta-New York JFK services on October 28, becoming the first airline to offer a nonstop flight between East Africa and the US.

"With over 40 American multinationals located in Nairobi and many more across Africa, the launch of daily flights is expected to further spur trade between America and Africa", the statement announcing the launch of the ticket sales reads.

According to the loss-making national carrier, the flights between Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and New York's JFK Airport will play a critical role in returning it to profitability adding that the airline's revenues from the route had the potential to increase its earnings by 10 per cent in the course of 2019.

The direct flight from Kenya's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the United States is set to create over 150 jobs at the airport. It will land in NY the next day at 6.30 AM.

Kenya Airways introduces historic daily flights to the US. The flight time is blocked at 15 hours westbound and 14 hours and 30 minutes in the eastbound direction.

Flight time between Nairobi and NY will be reduced from over 22 hours to 15 hours.

Tour operators say that the flight marks a milestone for the entire region and is expected to considerably boost travel from the U.S.

The chief executive noted the United States is Kenya's top tourist source market, with 95,771 people having visited between January and Oct 2017.

Kenya Airways already serves Africa, Europe, Middle-East, Indian sub-continent and Asia.

Between January and October 2017 over 95,000 tourists visited Kenya, a 20 percent increase in traffic every year for the past two years.

He added that the airline had confidence in the route, saying "we would not embark on this if we were not confident that it will work".
