Packers to name Joe Philbin offensive coordinator

REPORT: Packers expected to hire Mike Pettine as defensive coordinator

If multiple reports are accurate, former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine is landing in Green Bay as their next defensive coordinator.

The Green Bay Packers will have a defensive coordinator who has coached several top-10 units.

McCarthy fired Capers after the Packers finished 7-9 and ranked 22nd in total defense.

Pettine would succeed Dom Capers, who was sacked last week after a disappointing 7-9 season.

But Pettine has some pelts on his wall as a coordinator, most notably in his four years with the Jets and Rex Ryan.

His units were ranked in the top 10 in total defenses in the National Football League every one of those seasons, earning him a two-year stint as head coach of the Browns.

Pettine, 51, was defensive coordinator of the Jets (2009-12) and Bills (2013) before he became the Browns' head coach prior to the 2014 season. Vic Fangio, the Bears' defensive coordinator the last three seasons, had been in the running.

It was reported earlier in the week that Philbin was interviewing with his former team and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Philbin will be the new offensive coordinator.

The Green Bay Packers' coaching shake up is now about to come to a culmination.

Philbin was the Indianapolis Colts assistant head coach and offensive line coach the past two seasons, but he spent nine seasons with the Packers from 2003 through 2011, filling a variety of roles.
