The first F-150 with a diesel engine is heading to showrooms this spring, and should be the first full-size pickup to crack the 30 mpg barrier when it does.
Horsepower is rated at 250, but like other diesels its strong suit is torque-440 pound-feet, peaking at just 1700 rpm-and thrift: Ford anticipates an EPA highway fuel economy rating of 30 mpg.
The F-150's new 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 has 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque and delivers a maximum tow rating of 11,400 pounds. GM (Chevrolet and GMC) offers a diesel (the 6.6-liter Duramax V8) in its HD trucks, while the Toyota Tundra range is limited to gasoline engines, and does not include a heavy-duty model.
The Ford engine will be on display at the Detroit auto show, formally known as the North American International Auto Show, which opens to the public January 20. There's also fuel-saving Stop-Start, a feature that will now become standard on all F-150 models.
Fleet customers can order the diesel F-150 in SuperCrew with a 5.5- or 6.5-foot bed and the SuperCab with the 6.5-foot bed.
The new driveline will be available in various trims and body configurations for both 2-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive trucks.
The engine uses a common-rail fuel injection system that adds fuel at 29,000 pounds per square inch.

"We know that competing diesels with electric cooling fans have to dial back on power under extreme heat and altitude, so we decided on a viscous-controlled mechanical fan that has the capacity to move much more air across the radiator and intercooler in extreme conditions", said David Ives, Ford's diesel engine technical specialist.
WIth a new diesel under the hood, the 2018 F-150 diesel offers a towing capacity of 11,400 pounds, a payload capacity of 2,020 pounds and a projected EPA-estimated rating of 30 miles per hour highway.
At times when the truck isn't being pushed quite so hard, the mechanical fan's viscous coupler allows for more slip, reducing the load on the engine, while a pair of radiator shutters closes to improve aerodynamic efficiency.
Ford will begin taking orders, including from commercial buyers, later this month, and begin delivering it in the spring. The Detroit Auto Show will see Chevy launch an all-new version of the Silverado, while Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will introduce an all-new version of the Ram 1500.
