Sleeping woman sexually assaulted on Spirit flight to Detroit: complaint

Prabhu Ramamoorthy

Ramamoorthy is accused of abusing a 22-year-old sitting in a window seat next to him on a Spirit Airlines flight from Las Vegas which landed in Detroit early on January 3, even as his wife was by his side.

Prabhu Ramamoorthy an Indian national has been living in the US on the temporary visa and he was caught abusing a 22-year-old girl sitting next to him. She also says her trousers were undone and her shirt was unbuttoned to reveal her breasts. Flight attendants say that never happened.

The woman said she was sitting in a window seat next to Ramamoorthy, whose wife was in the aisle seat.

The victim claimed that 'she woke up to find her trousers and shirt unbuttoned and the man's hand inside her trousers, ' while his wife sat next to him. Ramamoorthy was arrested upon landing at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Wayne County Airport Authority took Ramamoorthy into custody when the flight landed at Detroit Metro Airport.

Ramamoorthy later told an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent he "might have" undone the woman's bra and cupped her breast, according to court records. While the onboard crew was talking to the woman, Ramamoorthy's wife came to the back to see what was going on, Jawad said.

Prabhu apparently stopped touching her when she awoke and opened her eyes around 5.30 am, which was 40 minutes before the plane was to land in Detroit.

Prabhu was arrested when the plane landed.

Ramamoorthy provided "conflicting reports", about the incident.

Ramamoorthy's wife told officials, 'they had called the flight attendants to try to change seats. He told investigators he was in a deep sleep and didn't do anything to the woman. However, the flight attendants denied the same. The magistrate found the case "very unusual" and ordered Ramamoorthy to be held after Jawad argued the assaulter posed a potential danger to people around him. "There have been no allegations from anywhere that his behaviour has ever been inappropriate prior to this incident", O'Neill said.

A representative for Spirit Airlines has stated that the company is cooperating with authorities.
