Chelsea set to beat Spurs and sign Everton midfielder Barkley for £15m

Tottenham Hotspur have also been keen on Barkley but, prior to Chelsea's latest expression of interest, had not been planning to bid...

Barkley rejected the offer of a lucrative contract from his boyhood club previous year and made it clear to the Goodison Park hierarchy that he was looking for pastures new, with many pinning his desire for wanting to leave down to his fractured relationship with former manager Ronald Koeman, who was relieved of his duties in October.

The 24-year-old came extremely close to a move during the summer transfer window, with Chelsea the main horse in the race.

Sam Allardyce admitted earlier this week that the club were resigned to losing Barkley this month and the BBC claim Chelsea have now agreed a £15m deal with the Toffees for his signature.

But negotiations between the clubs resumed once the transfer window re-opened on 1 January.

With Antonio Conte frustrated with the Chelsea board, after not getting the targets he wanted including watching Tottenham steal Fernando Llorente on deadline day from under their noses, Romelu Lukaku chose to go to Manchester United instead.

It looks like it's going to happen.

But Chelsea have this morning seen their odds of landing Barkley slashed from 4/9 to 1/5 - shorter than they've ever been.

Barkley, an Everton academy graduate, has scored 27 goals in 179 appearances since making his debut for the club in August 2011.
