The HSE admitted that it is "preparing for the possibility of this being a busier flu season".

"These symptoms include coughs, runny nose, fever, sore throat, fatigue, aches and pains".

Well, according to the report there are a number of "higher risk" groups. She said the flu vaccination is the biggest defense against the illness.

A total of 97,003 people sought outpatient and emergency treatment for flu-like symptoms at hospitals from December 24 to December 30, up 24 percent from the previous week, according to CDC's latest statistics.

"These indicators tell us that flu is actively starting to circulate in the community, yet it's not too late for people at risk to get the vaccine from their GP or pharmacist".

For most healthy people, recovering from flu can take roughly a week.

Thanks to a phenomenon called "genetic drift", the flu virus of this year is never the same as the flu virus of last year.

"We want to do everything we can to prevent the transmission of flu and so when I talk to my patients about getting the flu shot, I say, it's the most you can do, so you might as well take advantage of what you can do", he said.

"This particular virus tends to mutate very quickly".

MMA champion and global star Conor McGregor was among those affected by the "Aussie flu", officially known as H3N2, with experts saying the current strain appears to be particularly resistant to vaccines.

An estimated 9.2 million Americans have gotten sick with the flu each year since 2010.

Dr Kevin Kelleher, from the Irish Health Protection department, said: 'There have been a few deaths already, under 10 people have died so far this year.

You can only get the flu from the influenza virus.

There were 22 new cases of patients diagnosed with severe flu complications last week, including 18 who had not been vaccinated, CDC physician Wu Pei-huan (吳佩圜) said at a weekly briefing on the flu situation in Taiwan.

More than 100 of those cases required hospitalization.

New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker declared last week that influenza is now prevalent in the state, triggering a requirement that health care workers who have not been immunized must wear masks in areas where patients are typically present.

Dr. Mendoza is reminding people that the flu is a respiratory viral illness, and now is a good time to remind residents about ways to prevent the transmission of the illness. The most common side effects from the influenza shot are soreness, redness, tenderness or swelling where the shot was given.
