Packers to sign Mike McCarthy to 1-year extension

Reports: Packers part ways with Dom Capers, defensive coaches

It looks like Mike McCarthy will remain the head coach of the Green Bay Packers for the time being. Thompson then fired Mike Sherman as head coach after the 2005 season and hired McCarthy.

McCarthy had one more year left on his current deal, which was extended three years during the 2014 season. McCarthy would have been entering the final year of his contract in 2018 without an extension.

The Green Bay Packers fired defensive coordinator Dom Capers earlier on Monday and now they seem to be shuffling the front office around as well.

For a place that values consistency, having a new G.M. and a coach in a lame duck year would have been out of character.

"Mike is our man; he is our coach", Murphy said. The offense is now being coordinated by Edgar Bennett, though receivers coach Luke Getsy fled to Mississippi State to be the school's offensive coordinator. Bennett is a former receivers coach, and there's some consideration to moving him back into that role. Thompson has since agreed to become the team's senior adviser to football operations. That role has to be determined and a full GM search will be underway for the Pack.

Thompson has the Packers General Manager since the 2005.

McCarthy, 54, holds a regular-season record of 121-70-1 through 12 seasons in Green Bay.
