Britain braced for 80mph 'danger to life' Storm Eleanor battering

First week of 2018 will be total washout with 80mph winds and torrential downpours

As Storm Eleanor heads towards Ireland today Met Eireann have issued two weather warnings of lashing rain, high seas and winds of up to 130kmph.

"There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life, as well as minor property damage, from flying debris".

Power cuts and disruption to other services (mobile phones for example) may also occur.

This evening and overnight Storm "Eleanor" will bring a short period of disruptive winds to Cumbria and Lancashire which coincides with a period of high spring tides.

A weather phenomenon known as a Sting Jet could rip through eastern England as Storm Eleanor rips across Britain.

Carol Holt, the Environment Agency's flood duty manager, said the predicted strong winds could lead to coastal flooding from Tuesday until Thursday.

Turning drier for a time this afternoon with a few showers, but further rain and strong wind arriving later.

The yellow warning remains in place across Northern Ireland, however, the Met Office forecasters says there will be a severe gale risk, this "mainly across the south, especially Armagh and Down".

"If you're travelling, please check your route before setting off and don't drive through flood water".

"Our frontline teams are on the ground, checking defences and may close coastal flood gates".

Police in North Yorkshire have warned drivers to be extra careful tonight and tomorrow.

He said: "Torrential rain and gale-force winds are a recipe for driving disaster".

You'll be scrambling for your anoraks come Wednesday with torrential downpours likely to follow the windy start to the first week of 2018.
