Patriots Cruise Past Jets 26-6, Lock up #1 Seed in AFC

Week 17 New England Patriots

The win gives the Patriots the number one seed in the AFC playoffs for the seventh time since 2003 and the third time in the last four years. It's no secret that players love Bowles and his style of coaching and since they don't have to worry about him getting fired or anything at season's end, it should undoubtedly fire them up to win a big game for their coach when the odds are completely against them. They could not beat the Patriots in Pittsburgh earlier this month.

The star of the day was running back Dion Lewis, who had another impressive day on the ground which will help take some weight off of Brady's shoulders in the playoffs. Brady completed less than 50 percent of his passes and tight end Rob Gronkowski did not have a catch in the game.

But once New England jumped out to a 14-3 lead, this game was in the books. Bryce Petty was bad again.

Once again, there wasn't much at all by way of the return game, but the Pats did just fine without it.

The Patriots stretched the lead to 24-3 in the third quarter on a Stephen Gostkowski field goal. Allen pinned the Jets inside their own 20-yard line on five of his eight kicks.

Which would seem to make it somewhere between likely and very likely that the New England Patriots will be headed to Minneapolis for their eighth Super Bowl appearance with Bill Belichick as their coach and Tom Brady as their quarterback, seeking their sixth Super Bowl triumph.

The Patriots have already clinched the AFC East and earned a first-round bye in the playoffs, but that didn't stop them from implementing a unique tactic before Sunday's matchup against the Jets. Anything could happen, and they have to be ready for whoever is heading into their home, but the extra week of preparation will allow injuries to heal and the team to rest.
