One deputy was killed and several others were injured after responding to a domestic violence incident at an apartment complex and shots were fired early Sunday morning, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said.
One unidentified deputy sheriff was pronounced dead at the hospital, where other law enforcement soon after formed a large memorial procession heading to the county coroner's office. So far there have been no reports as to their status, nor on any civilian casualties.
The gunman had had encounters with law enforcement throughout the Denver metro area on a number of previous occasions, but had no criminal history, Spurlock said.
The officers "were shot very, very quickly", Spurlock told reporters.
A SWAT team responded to the scene, according to a spokeswoman for the Sheriff's office, and a major highway south of the city was shut down.
The sheriff's office tweeted he is believed to be "no longer a threat".
President Trump tweeted his "deepest condolences to the victims of the awful shooting in Douglas County. and their families".
As the incident was still unfolding, police asked people to avoid the area and for those nearby to shelter in place.
