Serena loses to Ostapenko in comeback after giving birth

Serena Williams set for likely Australian Open comeback post-pregnancy

Williams takes on reigning French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in a match scheduled just before the men's final in Abu Dhabi on Saturday evening.

Williams, seen on social media, has been actively doing physical activities to keep her in shape, but would be racing against time to be fit for the 2018 Australian Open where she will attempt to defend her title.

She gave birth to her first child, a girl named Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., on September 1.

Serena Williams was "excited to be back" after completing her first match since giving birth fourth months ago. "This was such a good time for me".

Abu Dhabi - Former world number one and 12-time major victor Novak Djokovic will face Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut in his first match in nearly six months at the Mubadala world championships on Friday.

"I am really honoured to play Serena in her first match after coming back and I think it is such a great opportunity for me. Only when I'm 100 per cent ready to play, I will be able to come back". However, the Shenzhen Open begins proceedings on 31st December, which therefore means that the Latvian would most likely be scheduled on the second day for her opening match in the WTA International tournament. "So, in my eyes, I feel it was a wonderful, wonderful match for me".

"I got it back now for sure because I think it's nice that the whole tour stopped, you don't have to worry about any results or that somebody can overtake you".

Williams' announcement of her exhibition on Saturday dovetails with Tennis Australia's confidence that she will play at Melbourne Park from January 15.

Both players will feature on the final day regardless of the result, with the victor taking on either Dominic Thiem or Kevin Anderson in the final, while the loser will compete in the third-place play-off.

"Of course, it is not going to be easy for me after such a great season but I have prepared well and I am just going to try to perform my best at the grand slams and try to stay inside the top-10".

'It's going to be great to have Novak on court again, for everybody, for all of us, ' he said after his victory against Rublev.
