According to NASA, January's first full moon - nicknamed a wolf moon - will take place on January 1 and it will be a supermoon.

New Year's Eve often prompts people to gaze into the sky, whether it be for a fireworks display or simply to watch the big ball drop in Times Square, but the night of January 1st, 2018, will give you another reason to look up.

A supermoon is the term given to full moons which occur at the same time as the moon reaches its closest point to Earth in orbit. The moon will appear to turn a reddish color, hence why they're usually called blood moons - meaning this supermoon will be something like a three-for-one special. The supermoon is a Full Moon when it is nearest point to the Earth on its orbit.

Another supermoon will take place on January 31, and according to NASA, it will also feature a total lunar eclipse.

In 2018 there will be two Blue Moons - one in January and one in March, February being left out without a full moon. Then, the moon will be just 223,068 miles from Earth, compared to its average distance of 238,855 miles.

Yet looking up at the moon itself to observe our celestial companion is worth it, and a supermoon (or other full moon) is as good an occasion as any to check it out.

A Blue Moon is when two full moons occur in the same month. Full moons are usually separated by 29 days, but the extra "blue moon" was able to squeeze in this January, which has 31 days.

You'll have another chance to catch a supermoon on January 31.

And, that super/blue moon on January 31 will have a red sheen to it, because it will be part of a lunar eclipse, according to NASA. The Jan. 31 supermoon will also feature a total lunar eclipse which will be visible western North America to eastern Asia. The Earth, Sun, and Moon don't always lie in the same line. "Folks in the Eastern United States, where the eclipse will be partial, will have to get up in the morning to see it", said Noah Petro, a research scientist from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
