Apple confirms software updates affected the performance of older iPhones

Step 5 How to maximise iPhone battery life

Apple provided a serial number look-up to check whether a given handset was one of the iPhainting iPhones.

The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles said, "As a result of defendant's wrongful actions, plaintiffs and class members had their phone slowed down, and thereby it interfered with plaintiffs' and class members' use or possession of their iPhones, plaintiffs and class members have otherwise suffered damages". But when they used their brother's iPhone 6 Plus, it was actually faster. The plaintiffs are accusing Apple of slowing down their older iPhone models when newer models are released and this has been happening without their consent or approval. It really doesn't matter how old your battery is, but how often you charge it. Older batteries need charging more frequently, for longer, and they don't like being cold. However, the feature lessened the computing power of the iPhones to stop overuse of battery power.

Apple had previously acknowledged battery problems in some iPhone 6s devices that meant the phones would suddenly shut down and offered to replace batteries affected by the issue. Apparently, Apple had implemented the features back in iOS 10.2.1.

The allegations were in a lawsuit filed Thursday in Chicago federal court on behalf of five iPhone owners from Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and North Carolina, all of whom say they never would have bought new iPhones had Apple told them that simply replacing the batteries would have sped up their old ones.

It is also important to point out that Apple's new feature does not impact all the units of the models mentioned in their statement.

A year ago we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. It even said, the latest iOS 11.1.2 update adds this function to last years iPhone 7. While there are some obvious gray areas about how Apple handled the rollout of this battery/performance balancing tactic, the lawsuit fails to take into account the technical side of the feature and how all lithium-ion batteries are subject to normal wear. And as the product gets older Apple introduced throttling to increase the life of the phone. It would also ensure that the iPhone retained its all-day battery life. Apple says that if it did not reduce performance there would be a greater risk of internal components being damaged. I think that would have gone a long way toward helping people understand.
