Woman says a hotel punished her for writing a negative review about them

After leaving a negative hotel review on Brown County's Abbey Inn & Suites' website, a couple vacationing in IN was charged $350 and threatened with legal action. "The room was unkempt, and it looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the last people stayed there", she said. "We checked the sheets and I found hairs and dirt", Arthur said.

A "nightmare" stay at a hotel was reportedly just the tip of the bad iceberg for an IN guest.

"So we start checking the sheets and the bed and we found hairs, dirt, so wasn't insane about that either, of course I was disgusted", she told ABC.

Moreover, their accommodations allegedly smelled like sewage, prompting the couple to try and find someone at the front desk they could speak with about the multitude of issues. She then cleaned the room herself.

"We didn't see anybody we could talk with, so I chose to call the number that goes to the front desk, and it automatically went to a lawyer's or something weird like that", said Arthur. "Not to go there, because I know people save their money for special occasions".

The hotel then charged her $350 after she left a negative review and threatened her with legal action, WRTV reported.

Szakaly said in a statement Wednesday that he is president and sole shareholder of Abbey Management Inc., but has not operated the 14-room Nashville hotel since January 2017, when new owners assumed control of the inn.

Indiana's suit, filed December 15, seeks a reimbursement for the guest, Katrina Arthur, and a court order barring the southern IN hotel from maintaining and enforcing such a policy, which it calls "unfair, abusive, and deceptive".

The lawsuit alleges that for more than a year, Abbey Inn had rules that allowed them to charge customers if they left a negative review.

The policy, which neither Arthur nor any of the other guests who stayed at the facility were privy to, went to state that any guests refusing to take back negative comments will be entitled to legal action. That scared her, so she took the online review down.

Arthur said there was no one present during her stay who she could complain to.

"It's been a terrible 24 hours for us", Sweet said.

Consumers should not be afraid to leave a negative review of a business if warranted.

Based on the protections of IN and federal law, consumers should feel comfortable leaving truthful reviews about their experiences. Arthur was also forced to retract the review or face legal hell. "Consumers should continue to write truthful reviews". "This question has always been settled and it is unbelievable to me that any business in this day and age would think that they could constrain a consumer in such a way".
