Explosion in Christian Church in Pakistan: 5 Reportedly Killed, 16 Injured

The police officials have claimed that their alert men reacted in a timely manner and successfully averted a much larger tragedy

Balochistan home minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti said that at least two suicide bombers were involved in the attack on the Bethel Memorial Church on Zarghoon road in Quetta.

Police said the attack could have been much worse had they not successfully shot and killed one of the attackers before they could detonate the bomb.

Police said terrorists attacked Bether Memorial Methodist church when the Sunday prayer was being held. "We stay united and steadfast to respond against such heinous attempts", he said.

Kal Alaxander, 52, was at the church with his wife and two children when the attack happened.

Two women were among the dead, and 10 women and seven children were among the injured, hospital officials said.

The prime minister praised the security forces for their prompt response, PM office media wing said in a press release issued in Islamabad.

"Suddenly a huge explosion occurred outside the hall that broke window panes", he told the newspaper.

According to the official statement of Health Ministry, an emergency has been declared in local public hospitals.

The IGP said security had been beefed up across the province in the wake of the church attack.

The most fatal attack was the double-suicide blast on a Peshawar church, which killed 85 people in September 2013. He also expressed his sympathies with the victims' families and wished for early recovery of the injured.

ISIS quickly took credit for the blast, making it the first time the terror cell has claimed bombing a church in Pakistan.

The has been the target of a terrorist attack in the past.

Meanwhile, the country's Foreign Ministry has condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly deed and stressing the Pakistani government's commitment to the fight against terrorism.

Several gunmen have reportedly attacked a Christian church in the southern Pakistani city of Quetta.

Another 15 people were killed at two churches in Lahore when suicide bombers struck each of them. "They are fighting against terrorists and our war will continue till complete elimination of the terrorists", he highlighted.
