Colorado Ranked Among Healthiest In The Country

This is a first for MA as the healthiest state, dethroning Hawaii's five-year stint at the top.

"We don't have a system with everybody in", said Dr. Georges Benjamin, executive director of the American Public Health Association, which was not involved in the new report.

Utah was one of the most improved states, rising four places from the previous year to fourth place.

That leaves the United States positioning 27th regarding future in a correlation of 35 nations, as indicated by the report. In the past five years, MA saw a 69 percent increase in drug deaths, or an addition of 8-plus deaths per 100,000 people.

This year's report from "America's Health Rankings" found that MA has the highest concentration of mental health providers, the lowest obesity rate, more than 200 primary care physicians and more than 80 dentists per 100,000 residents.

Some states in the U.S. continue to be healthier than others, despite efforts to reduce disparities across the country, a new report says. That expansion is propelled in part by drug deaths, which grew 7% during the stipulated time and cardiovascular deaths, which went up 2%. Air pollution has also decreased, and the percentage of children younger than age 18 who were living in households at or below the poverty level decreased for the second year in a row.

"This report is vital for gauging how the health of each state's population changes by year and decade", the authors wrote in the report. It also has some of the lowest rates of salmonella, diabetes, and preventable hospitalizations in the country. Among the state's strengths are its low percentage of uninsured people, low prevalence of obesity, and high vaccination rates. Utah and Florida had the largest improvements in the rankings since the 2016 report. "We will continue to strive to address persistent health disparities and create conditions which allow all of us to live long, healthy lives".

The other worrying trend highlighted in this year's report is the uneven geographical distribution of key health care providers, including mental health providers.

"Increases in cardiovascular deaths and drug overdoses can be reversed, but it will take concerted action by government, health systems, communities and individuals", Frieden, now president and CEO of the group Resolve to Save Lives, wrote in an email.
