Egyptian singer Shyma jailed for 'immoral' banana video

Egyptian singer Shyma is jailed for 2 years for suggestively eating banana in music video

Sentencing of #Egyptian singer #Shyma and director Mohamed Gamal is against #freedomofexpression.

According to The Telegraph, Shyma was seen in court covering her face with a niqab and reading the Quran while waiting to receive her prison sentence.

In 2015, a court jailed a female dancer to a year in prison for "inciting debauchery" in a raunchy music video for a song called "Let Go of My Hand".

Shyma appeared in the video clad in underwear and singing while suggestively eating an apple, a banana and a taco shell in front of a classroom filled with smiling young men.

The video created a stir on social media in conservative and Muslim-majority Egypt and was discussed on TV talk shows.

The singer apologized for the backlash the video received.

If Shyma's music video had aired on MTV in the United States, she likely wouldn't be facing jail time.

"My apologies to all people who watched the video and did not like it because they think it's inappropriate", Ahmed wrote in a Facebook post.

"I didn't imagine all this would happen and that I would be subjected to such a strong attack from everyone, as a young singer ... who has dreamt from a young age of being a singer", she wrote.

Shyma is only the latest Egyptian artist to be prosecuted for "inciting debauchery" with sexually explicit music videos.

Shyma, whose real name is Shaimaa Ahmed, was arrested on 18 November before being referred to the prosecution for investigation. Egypt's musicians union subsequently banned Shyma from performing, reports Gulf News Egypt.

A lawsuit was filed last month after video emerged showing Sherine Abdel Wahab being asked at a concert a year ago to sing Mashrebtesh Men Nilha (Have You Drunk From The Nile?).
