Israeli Army Destroys Tunnel From Gaza Strip

IDF General Warns Gazans, 'Do Not Test Our Strength'

The tunnel is believed to have belonged to the Hamas terror organization.

A network of Gaza tunnels allowed Hamas gunmen to blindside Israel's superior forces during the 2014 war and the Israelis, with USA help, have since stepped up work on counter-measures.

"We see this as a severe violation of Israeli sovereignty and we hold the Hamas terror organization responsible", said Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus.

During the 2014 summer war with Israel, Hamas terrorists on several occasions made their way into Israel through terror tunnels, although they did not manage to reach civilian areas.

Conricus said the tunnel was destroyed using a new system to detect, expose, and destroy tunnels.

The Salafi Islamic terror group Tawhid al-Jihad, which has in the past sought to overthrow Hamas's rule in Gaza, later claimed responsibility for the rocket launches.

Israeli troops stationed on the borders between southeast Gaza Strip and Israel shot and wounded six Palestinians on Thursday, medical sources said. Although not complete, he said the tunnel was "very substantial", equipped with electricity, communications equipment and a ventilation system.

The Israeli defense forces have demolished two tunnels leading to the country from Gaza Strip within the last 1.5 months.

Over the weekend, Israeli airstrikes hit several militant sites in Gaza in response to rocket fire, killing two Hamas militants.

The announcement, cleared by Israeli censors who had previously barred reports of detection work around the central Gaza frontier, followed a surge of Palestinian unrest in response to last week's United States recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The group threatened to retaliate against Israel for the deaths of its members.
