Ukraine: Protesters gather in Kiev after police recapture ex-Georgia leader Saakashvili

Ukraine bows to IMF pressure on anti-corruption agency

Ukraine's Chief Prosecutor's Office had declared Saakashvili wanted for cooperating with criminal groups and the cover up of offenses committed by them.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko says he has not interfered in the work of state anticorruption agencies, comments that come amid mounting domestic and foreign pressure over Kyiv's commitment to combating graft.

Protester Igor Ognyov, from the eastern city of Sumy, told The Associated Press that the police stormed the camp before dawn on Wednesday.

The report on the politician's detention was later posted on Mikheil Saakashvili's Facebook page.

The efforts to detain Saakashvili have raised fears that Ukraine could be facing its most acute political crisis since the 2014 revolution.

As of 2200 GMT, a few hundred protesters had gathered near the facility not far from the parliament, shouting 'Shame!' and 'Kiev, get up!' while a large number of police in riot gear stood guard. "They have detained Mikheil Saakashvili", and called for his supporters to protest.

"I'm ready to host their investigators here at the camp", he said.

His latest arrest marks another extraordinary twist in a long feud between Saakashvili and Ukrainian authorities.

He is being investigated for alleged support of a criminal organization, and allegedly receiving money from deposed president Viktor Yanukovych, who is now exiled in Russian Federation, to start a coup in Ukraine.

Saakashvili was stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship by Poroshenko in July while overseas and is now stateless.

Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko said the 49-year-old anti-corruption campaigner was arrested on charges of trying to stage a coup sponsored by Russian Federation.
