Correcting the mistake later, CNN issued the following statement: "CNN's initial reporting of the date on an email sent to members of the Trump campaign about Wikileaks documents, which was confirmed by two sources to CNN, was incorrect".
An email sent to President Donald Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. before the 2016 election included a decryption key for hacked documents that the website WikiLeaks had made public a day earlier.
"We understand that the media reported 12 hours prior to this email that the DNC emails had been hacked or leaked", Alan Futerfas, a lawyer for Trump Jr, told CNN.
WaPo reports that the email sent to the Trump administration was not sent on September 4, days before the leak went public, but on September 14, one day afterwards.
Heres the correction posted on CNN's website.
Cable news networks just cant seem to get their facts straight when it comes to publishing purportedly damning reports about the Trump campaigns efforts to collude with the Russians.
"I hope this information help (sic) you", the email said, with the writer noting that the "huge" archive of emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee was 678 megabytes.
Last month, Trump Jr. released messages he exchanged on Twitter with WikiLeaks starting in September 2016, including about an anti-Trump PAC's password and a request from Trump Jr. and his father to push out links about the WikiLeaks' Podesta email release. The existence of the email was first reported by CNN around 8 a.m. Friday.
The email - sent the afternoon of September 14, 2016 - noted that "Wikileaks has uploaded another (huge 678 mb) archive of files from the DNC" and included a link and a "decryption key", according to a copy obtained by The Washington Post.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders also calls out CNN for reporting fake news.
But at 1 p.m. ET, the story unraveled.
Still, Trump Jr. and many others have claimed otherwise. He said that was discussed in the intelligence committee interview.
The individual was able to obtain the email addresses for Trump Jr. and his personal assistant, as well as an email that congressional investigators believe was for then-candidate Trump, although he rarely uses email.
Rep. Adam Schiff said the committee is working to determine its veracity.
Schiff also criticized the leaks. Trump yelled at the reporter.
This new revelation also raises again the question of why Trump Jr. did not contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation over any of this, as one is supposed to do when approached by foreign agents with offers of help for a presidential campaign. The messages weren't immediately returned.
President Donald Trump slammed CNN on Saturday morning and accused them of making a "vicious and intentional mistake" after it was forced to correct a flawed report on Friday about the Trump campaign getting advance information about WikiLeaks.
Garten said there's no evidence Trump personally saw the email.
President Trump also attacked CNN for the wrongful coverage as he attended a rally in Pensacola, Florida, late Friday.
