North Korea says UN envoy expressed willingness to ease tensions

North Korea, UN Agree to Communicate Regularly

North Korea regularly threatens to destroy South Korea and the United States and says its weapons programs are necessary to counter US aggression.

Jeffrey Feltman, the highest-level U.N. official to visit North Korea since 2012, met with Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and Vice Minister Pak Myong Guk, the United Nations said in a statement on Saturday after Feltman arrived back in Beijing. Feltman, who left Pyongyang earlier today, has yet to comment on his trip.

Despite calls from other world leaders for restraint, this year has seen US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un hurl insults at each other, both at one time saying the other was mad.

Kim Hyun-uk of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy said the dialogue will not make a significantly positive impact on the peninsula, given North Korea's standing position on nuclear weapons.

Both the UN delegation and the North Korean representatives acknowledged that Feltman's visit contributed to deepening the understanding between North Korea and the UN Secretariat, and both sides agreed to maintain communications through visits at different levels on a regular basis in the future, North Korea's state-owned news agency added.

The visit by Feltman, an American citizen and former State Department official, comes amid high tensions on the peninsula fanned by tough talk and posturing by Pyongyang and Washington.

North Korea is also concerned about the effects worldwide sanctions have had on the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Six U.N. agencies, with about 50 global staff, are represented in the North. He visited a children's food factory and a hospital in Pyongyang on Thursday. The North recently launched its most advanced missile to date and the USA and South Korea are now holding joint exercises with some of the world's most powerful fighter aircraft.
