Japanese star to sign with Angels

Ohtani had narrowed his pool of teams to seven earlier this week, but the decision on the Angels came Friday afternoon. He had a scary moment in May when a 93 miles per hour pitch by a Pittsburgh reliever hit him in the face. Because of limits on how much teams can pay global players under 25 years old, the 23-year-old Ohtani wil earn the major league minimum salary ($545,000) in 2018.

TIGERS: Detroit agreed to a major league deal with right-hander Mike Fiers.

Ohtani will go to the Angels instead, one of seven teams the hyped Japanese pitcher-slash-slugger considered in the end. "He sees this as the best environment to develop and reach the next level and attain his career goals".

"This morning, after a thorough, detailed process, Shohei Ohtani has chose to sign with the Los Angeles Angels".

Ohtani, a 6-foot-3, 23-year-old star of Nippon Professional Baseball's (NPB) Pacific League, has been the talk of baseball since the latter half of 2017. Ohtani, who will be under the Angels' contractual control for six years, will sign a minor league contract and can receive up to $2,315,000 in worldwide bonus money from the Angels.

Yet Angels general manager Billy Eppler is very serious about winning, and he has spent several years scouting Ohtani, ever since his previous job with the Yankees.

The Rangers had the most in their global bonus pool at $3.535 million.

Many speculated that Ohtani would prefer to play in the American League, where he could pitch out of a starting rotation and serve as a designated hitter between starts - maximizing his time on the mound and at the plate, at least in theory.

A fourth-round pick by Colorado in 2004, Iannetta spent parts of six seasons with the team before being traded to the Los Angeles Angels on November 30, 2011, for pitcher Tyler Chatwood. Follow our Facebook page to get updates on your news feed!

A two-way star known both for his pitching and his bat, Ohtani hit.332 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 65 games last season while battling various injuries.

Shortly after the World Series ended, the Angels secured a five-year, $106 million deal with Upton, their late-season trade acquisition.

Fiers has one complete game in 123 big league starts - a no-hitter he pitched for Houston in 2015 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
