Giancarlo Stanton Vetoes Trade That Would Have Sent Him To Cardinals

Will the Cubs' championship window depend on where Shohei Ohtani and Giancarlo Stanton end

So, any trade for Stanton would likely mean they'd have to jettison salary, not to mention the numerous assets they would have to send to the Marlins to complete the trade.

Could Giancarlo Stanton possibly end up in NY?

In recent days, multiple major league sources have told The Athletic that Stanton does not want the San Francisco Giants or St. Louis Cardinals, the two teams that have reached trade agreements with the Marlins, pending the player's approval. The Giants and Cardinals have also fallen out of the running after showing interest, but aren't almost the kind of contenders that Stanton's top-four teams are.

According to reports, Stanton, the reigning NL MVP, has the Yankees on a list of teams he would approve a trade to from the Miami Marlins. The Winter Meetings begin on Sunday, and these teams would ideally like to have things figured out on the Stanton front before they attack the offseason's most active few days.

They like Stanton very much but would clearly be looking for a (good) deal if they were to seriously entertain such a move, and the Marlins will want to give the Giants and Cardinals every chance first. The Cardinals and Giants were both reportedly expected to take on the majority of it in a trade, but it's less likely that the Dodgers or Yankees would be willing to do the same.

Stanton will make $25 million in 2018 and he has $295 million remaining over the last 10 years of the contract. However, it seems like a long shot to happen with them - at least at this time. For either of them to do it, they would have to unload a bad contract of their own.

In any case, the issue isn't so much that Stanton's contract has 10 years remaining, but that at $295 million, it costs the Marlins almost $30 million a year.
