Obama in Chicago on Tuesday for Rahm climate summit

US Withdrawing From Paris Climate Agreement

The agreement, modeled on the Paris agreement, commits individual cities to bringing down their carbon emissions.

Former President Barack Obama jokingly thanked himself in a speech Tuesday while outlining the economic achievements of his administration.

As upbeat and positive as Obama can be, but what he is discussing is truly apocalyptic in nature.

The Chicago Climate Charter represents cities around the world that want to "confront climate change head-on", said Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a statement. He said the most important work addressing climate change isn't being done at the level of national leaders, but is being done on the ground.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Lord Mayor Isaya Mwita Charles signs the Chicago Climate Charter at the North American Climate Summit at the Sheraton Hotel in Chicago. "You are accustomed to having to deal with the realities in front of you and take action, not just talk about it". The announcement POTUS made earlier this year involves nations setting benchmarks to reduce emissions of heat-trapping gases.

Trump rejected the Paris Agreement (as it is also known) and so the mayors of North America are picking up the slack, doing what the President of the United States won't really do: curb climate change.

"We live in a time when everything is contested - and so often because of the splintering of our media, it is possible to only occupy a world in which the facts that come in conform to your pre-existing conceptions", he said. Trump's defense is that the terms of the agreement should be more favorable to businesses and taxpayers.

Many big city American mayors pilloried Trump as being shortsighted. "We are stuck with that, at least for a couple more years", Jackie Biskupski (D), mayor of Salt Lake City, said at the conference.

The Chicago agreement includes a committment to reducing carbon emissions, reporting and tracking city emissions, and developing city-specific climate programs and policies, among other pledges.

Some mayors have specifically agreed to commitments to expand public transportation and invest in natural climate solutions such as tree canopy and vegetation.

Emanuel, much like his classy former boss, did not refer to Trump by name. "I am proud to stand together with the leading global city climate networks including the Global Covenant of Mayors, Climate Mayors and C40 to take decisive action to improve our environment while bettering our communities, and that begins right here".

"Each mayor is going to sign their own customized plan on how they are going to achieve the 2025 Paris Agreement", Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who is hosting the climate summit, told USA TODAY. "As it relates to climate change, we can't afford as leaders of our respective cities for the absence of leadership and the wrongheadedness of policy by President Trump".

The charter will succeed within American cities and states, the only thing it will have difficulty duplicating from the Paris Agreement is the aid of billions of dollars to other countries.
