IIHS Top Safety Rating: Only 15 Cars Make Cut for 2018

For 2018, the institute implemented new requirements for headlights and frontal crash evaluations, which left just 15 vehicles that qualified for the Top Safety Pick+ award.

Every year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety names only a handful of vehicles with its Top Safety Pick+ honor.

The models that earned the top ranking for 2018 so far are the BMW 5 Series, Kia Forte sedan, Genesis G80, Genesis G90, Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport, Lincoln Continental, Kia Soul, Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Subaru Impreza, Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Subaru WRX, and Toyota Camry, according to Consumer Reports.

"Toyota and Lexus remain committed to providing safe and reliable vehicles and we're proud to have Toyota Safety Sense and Lexus Safety System+ as standard equipment on nearly every new model in our line-up". All models received a "Superior" rating in front crash prevention when equipped with EyeSight.

"Most drivers when they buy a auto they think the passenger is going to be protected as well as they are".

"Drivers expect that their passengers, who are often family, will be protected just as well as they are", says IIHS President Adrian Lund. In short, base models rarely make the grade.

The institute rates front crash prevention by conducting low- and moderate-speed track tests of vehicles with automatic braking systems.

IIHS is placing more emphasis on the impact of headlights on the safety rating of new vehicles.

Headlights also had to perform to standards in another new test in order to earn top ratings.

Lund said Toyota leads the way in making crash avoidance technology standard equipment. Fifteen of those earning its highest award despite tougher criteria requiring better headlights and enhanced passenger side protection.
