PM Modi questions Congress for linking Ayodhya dispute with 2019 polls

SC adjourns hearing in Ayodhya dispute case to February 2018

The development comes a day after Sibal, who is representing the Sunni Waqf Board in the Ram temple issue, urged the Supreme Court to take up the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi case in July 2019, after the Lok Sabha elections.

Dhandhuka:Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the Congress party now wanted to link Ram Temple in Ayodhya with 2019 elections.

The Congress was quick to hit back. "You want to stop the hearing of Ram temple (issue) in the name of elections", Modi told a well attended election rally here in Ahmedabad district.

"Yes Kapil Sibal is our lawyer but he is also related to a political party, his statement in SC yesterday was wrong, we want a solution to the issue at the earliest", news agency ANI quoted Sunni Waqf Board member Haji Mehboob as saying.

Watch accompanying video for more details. Regarding the entire controversy, Sibal said that, " Will discussion on my going to the court & representing someone solve serious problems in the country? "You want to keep the issue unresolved for political gain and losses in the elections?"

Congress leader Anand Sharma said his party was not a litigant in the dispute, and would accept whatever decision the Supreme Court made. "No such directive had been given by the board", Chairman of the Sunni Waqf Board Zafar Farooqui said in Lucknow. Surjewala said that the BJP has stated in its manifesto that it will act in line with the Supreme Court order. "Congress should answer." the PM said.

He asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi to take a stand on the Ramjanamabhoomi matter. Why does he have to link a Ram Mandir with elections. Amit Shah post Sunni Waqf Board's statement that they want the case to be hear soon, said that Kapil Sibal was representing Congress view in Supreme Court on the behest of 'High Command'.

Speaking on the issue of "triple talaq", Modi said "When the matter was in the Supreme Court, the Government had to put their affidavit".

A law banning the controversial practice of instantaneous divorce that would provide for jail sentence to those "ruining the lives of our mothers and sisters" will be passed by Parliament, Modi said, apparently seeking to reach out to Muslim women. "They have tried to target all leaders except those from one family".

On the cyclone Ockhi dissipating and sparing the state any devastation, Modi mocked the opposition partys slogan for the Gujarat elections, which said Congress ave che (Congress is coming).
