South Africa triumph in opening World Rugby Sevens Series event in Dubai

South Africa were triumphant in Dubai

As a result of the 24-12 win over New Zealand in the final‚ South Africa won their fifth Dubai title and set themselves up perfectly for next weekend's home tournament in Cape Town after winning all six matches in the emirate.

Defending World Rugby Sevens series champions South Africa triumphed at the series opening event in Dubai.

New Zealand typically fought back after Rosko Specman was yellow carded‚ with tries through Andrew Knewstubb and captain Scott Curry to make it a nervy end to the match.

After losing to New Zealand in the semifinal, England captain Tom Mitchell, said: "It's tough to take and awful to lose but they seized their chances better than we did". A try in the last few seconds from Tim Agaba, however, sealed the 24-12 victory for the Blitzboks.

Senatla scored another try to put South Africa 12-0 up in the tie, following the first minute opener from Cecil Afrika.

"As a first tournament for us this season I'm really proud of the continuous effort and the attitude the boys displayed in every single game", said Amor.

The series next heads to Cape Town on 9 December.

"We want to focus on our processes and it we leave the result and result doesn't go our way then we're still happy".

Jeffery Oluoch powered over from a turn over ball to put Kenya ahead, but his celebration was cut short by Seabelo Senatla, who latched onto a loose ball in the middle to draw level before he grabbed the brace for the tournament's champions. With the conversion good, Fiji mounted their comeback through Jerry Tuwai, the quick footed playmaker running in an easy score after multiple phases of play stretched the defence thin.

On the men's side, Canada split its opening games, with a 29-15 loss to Kenya followed by a 22-17 win over Uganda.
