There will be one on New Year's Day followed by another on January 31, which, according to NASA, will be a "super blue blood moon". The weather in West Michigan looks to cooperate with partly cloudy to mostly clear skies from Saturday evening to Sunday morning.
The difference is noticeable for close observers - particularly if the moon is near the horizon, where it can be compared with terrestrial landmarks. The Moon's orbit around our planet is tilted so it usually falls above or below the shadow of the Earth. If you want to celebrate the year's most super supermoon as a holiday for moongazers, I don't see anything wrong with that. Since the moon's orbit is elliptical, one side (apogee) is about 30,000 miles (50,000 km) farther from Earth than the other (perigee). The supermoon will reach its perigee -the closest point in its orbit around the Earth - at 3:45 a.m. the following day.
The only supermoon of the year is slated for December 3, 2017, at precisely 15:47 UTC, according to EarthSky.org.

The bigger question is whether we'll be able to see the supermoon in Seattle.
"The supermoons are a great opportunity for people to start looking at the moon", said Noah Petro, a research scientist from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The celestial events will be visible on both January 2 and January 31, but those conclude the remainder of 2018's supermoons, so make them count.
