The San Francisco 49ers will start Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback this week.

Tuesday's news came down via the 49ers' Twitter account: "49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan met with the team's quarterbacks today and informed them that Jimmy Garoppolo will start this Sunday in Chicago".

Garoppolo was acquired by the 49ers in a trade with the New England Patriots last month.

Garoppolo completed both passes, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to Louis Murphy.

Beathard was injured in Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, which pressed Garoppolo into brief duty. The four-year veteran is slated for free agency after the season, but Shanahan said the 49ers are willing to give him the franchise tag to ensure he stays in 2018.

Garoppolo 96 passing attempts over 18 games has completed 67.7 percent of his throws, including six touchdowns and no interceptions.

It's Jimmy Garoppolo time in San Francisco. With Beathard dealing with a knee bruise and hip strain, Shanahan likely felt compelled to go with the only fully healthy option, Garoppolo.

Beathard was 22 of 38 for 201 yards and no touchdowns against the Seahawks.

Shanahan said previously that whoever starts must get all of the practice repetitions beginning with Wednesday's session.

Garoppolo said after Sunday's 24-13 loss that he was "pretty excited" about the prospect of playing in Soldier Field for the first time since entering the NFL.

"When you're making a long-term decision on someone for your organization, for you to pay him the amount of money that you do for quarterbacks, that's a big deal", Shanahan said.
