Milan turn to Gattuso to bring back halcyon days

AC Milan sack Montella and put Gattuso in charge

Milan have endured a disappointing start to the season despite some heavy investment over the summer, winning just two of their last nine league games to find themselves seventh in the Serie A table and already 18 points adrift of leaders Napoli.

"A club statement released on their official Twitter account read: "#ACMilan announce to have parted ways with @VMontella.

Gattuso went on to have short spells at Palermo and Greek outfit OFA Crete, while he also guided Pisa to Serie B - and then went on to see them finish bottom - before going on to take the U19 job at Milan.

"Expectations were raised a bit too high by everyone in the summer".

Gattuso, of course, played for Rangers from 1997 to 1998.

Gattuso takes charge at the San Siro.

Gattuso made more than 450 appearances for AC Milan between 1999 and 2012, helping Milan win two Serie A titles and making 72 global appearances for Italy, being part of their 2006 World Cup winning team.

Younger recruits included Portuguese striker Andre Silva, right back Andrea Conti, a product of Atalanta's impressive youth scheme, Switzerland left back Ricardo Rodriguez and Turkish midfielder and free kick specialist Hakan Calhanoglu. The Rossoneri are now sitting in seventh place with just six wins from their opening 14 league games.

Milan, seven-times European champions, won their first six competitive games but quickly lost their spark and Sunday's match was their fourth home league game in a row without scoring.
