Schiano to be named Tennessee Vols Head Coach

Vols fans unhappy about potential Schiano hiring

First-year Tennessee athletic director John Currie fired fifth-year coach Butch Jones on November 12 with two games still remaining on the scheduled and launched a nationwide search for Jones' replacement.

Starting quarterback Jarrett Guarantano has a history with Schiano, who is now serving as Ohio State's defensive coordinator, dating back to his days as a child in New Jersey.

Schiano coached at Rutgers prior to his stint with the Bucs, and has been working as the defensive coordinator for Ohio State the past few seasons, so the move back to being a college head coach is not surprising.

The 51-year-old Schiano coached Rutgers from 2001 to 2011.

Tennessee (4-8, 0-8 SEC) is coming off the worst season in program history.

Schiano to be named Tennessee Vols Head Coach

VolQuest.com is reporting that multiple sources have confirmed that Tennessee is "close" to a deal that would make Greg Schiano the Volunteers' next head football coach.

Schiano is now Ohio State's defensive coordinator, be he has a relationship with Tennessee athletic director John Currie. However, he did wonders for a Rutgers program that has fallen apart without him, going 68-67 in 11 seasons. He led Rutgers to six bowl game appearances and was victorious in five.

Currie reportedly targeted Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen before turning his attention to Schiano.

Was Schiano being considered throughout the coaching search? He went 11-21 in his two seasons there and was sacked after the 2013 season.
