Athletic director Bill Moos announced Saturday that Riley's employment with the school has been terminated effective immediately and the search for a replacement is underway.
Nebraska is the latest college football program to make a coaching change.
After consulting with university leaders, Moos made a decision to seek a new coach for the storied football program, which finished with a disappointing 4-8 record in 2017.
Nebraska was just 19-19 in three seasons under Riley, and the program has clearly taken a step back - and is nowhere near where fans and boosters expect it to be.
Moos said Nebraska is now in a "full-fledged coaching search", and will be looking for the best fit.
"Scott Frost is a very good football coach".
Moos said Linebackers coach Trent Bray will serve as interim head coach for the program until a permanent one can be hired. "He's in the heat of trying to win a conference championship", Moos said.
Nebraska has not offered the job to anyone, which would includes Frost despite reports he's a "done deal" to return to Lincoln.
"I told the players today nobody wants to go 4-8", Moos said.
Frost is now the coach at the University of Central Florida. Leach's success at relatively mediocre programs such as Texas Tech and Washington State could also lead some to say, "Just imagine the success he could have at a place like Nebraska?"
