Paramedics take dying woman to beach one last time

Tears were shed as ambulance crew grants dying woman's last wish

The paramedics were taking the woman for what was likely her last journey back to the hospital - when she asked for one final trip to the beach.

The moment was captured by Danielle Kellan, the other member of the crew.

Her colleague Graeme Cooper can be seen standing next to the gurney on the Hervey Bay beach in Queensland.

A QAS spokesperson wrote in a Facebook post that 'sometimes it is not the drugs/training/skills - sometimes all you need is empathy to make a difference'.

These words, spoken by a palliative care patient during a stop on the way to hospital, resonated with Danielle Kellan and Graeme Cooper who recalled the story on Thursday. The picture shows them looking towards the ocean at Hervey Beach.

In just 24 hours the post has been shared by close to 20,000 people and "liked" nearly 60,000 times.

"I said to the patient, "what are you thinking?'", Cooper said".

"I got a vomit bag (out of the ambulance) and I thought "well, if all these rocks weren't here I'd get into my jocks and take you down into the ocean" and I would have".

Tracey Hayes wrote on Facebook: "This is a lovely sentiment and shows that you are definitely the right people for the job you are in, never ever lose your compassion, empathy or kindness". "They did this for her a couple of weeks ago too". On the day of her wedding her mother collapsed as she had terminal cancer. "It made her so happy and I was in tears when she told me about it".

'In special cases where end of life stuff is going on.the contact we have is our last contact.[we want to] feel good about humans and people and the way they're treated and managed so they get a good feeling, ' he explained. "Thank you for sharing", read one reply.
